The background image is made up of repeated copies of the two gender ordinate symbols, male and female, overlaping on their circular centres. The overlaping is used to indicate a sense of union, or some form of grey area, between these two symbols - symbols that are otherwise considered to have meanings that are extremely bipolar indeed. This is an image seen very commonly within the transgender community.
Only the outlines of the symbols are visible, and the outlines are coloured such that it looks like the symbols are infact embossed into the background - as if you could reach out and feel them, as if you could feel around their edges.
The images are very low contrast compared to the rest of the page, closely matching the otherwise dominant slightly pink tinted background colour. The hint of pink, a traditionally feminine colour, is relatively slight, to avoid being too cliched.
